Site issues

System failure

Over the past week we’ve had a few issues with the site not working as it should for a number of reasons. This has resulted in error messages, downtime, difficulty logging in and posting and profiles not working properly. We would like to offer all users and viewers our apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Scarce resources

First of all, it would appear there have been some scripts running in the background, using up all the server’s resources and resulting in the dreaded “Resource limit reached”. This site is on shared hosting, which means a lot of other sites are also hosted on the same server and server resources also have to be shared.

Account hacked

Last Tuesday, one of our user’s accounts was hacked by someone using a proxy to hide behind. As noted on The Mysterious Case of the Gremlin who Posted, someone used that account to post something rather odd. The logs show some rather strange activity taking place on the site at the time, resulting first in the dreaded resource limit error noted above and then the site was down for a few hours. We are still investigating but, suffice to say, we are fully aware that unauthorised access to computer material is a criminal offence under s.1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990.

Emergency procedures

As a result of the unauthorised penetration into the back-end of the site, a few emergency procedures had to be put in place to prevent further incursion and protect the integrity of the site and its users. There were some side effects associated with these emergency procedures which had an impact on the ability to use this site. More sustainable security measures have now been put in place, replacing the emergency procedures which caused a bit of trouble.

Normal service has been resumed

Most of the issues noted above have been resolved, although we may still experience resource issues from time to time, due to hosting on a low capacity shared server.

There are some people out there who would like to see this site closed down for their own reasons, so it does not come as a surprise to see attempts at foul play.

I don’t think that any of this stuff has come as a surprise to us here. Sure, we get our fair share of the usual spammers full of ‘Eastern Promise,’ and the usual mindless ‘cyber-vandalism.’ But there is a difference between that stuff and the more focussed disruption which has recently resulted in a number of sites that share the same server being affected. And of course, when a masked hacker manages to prove his mental disability by hi-jacking an account and posting a comment – that really is impressive. Especially when the comment they post leaves very little doubt as to who the hacker is, as it automatically identifies them as being one of a very short list of ‘Usual Suspects.’

So you’ve managed to p1$$ off several other sites as well as this one, and succeeded in making it pretty clear to us all who you are as well. You’re not doing yourselves any favours – talk about ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ eh ?

But – heigh ho – if it makes you feel good, then you just keep on digging that hole, guys – and don’t mind us looking down and laughing. Carry on, chaps…

And in case you’re unable to speak in ‘joined-up English,’ and can only converse in ‘You-Tube,’ then here is something in your own native language:-

    …and that’s that.

Little birds have told me that Old Fart has done something that borders harassment. Had he done the same thing to me I would have repoeted him to the police!

  3. BillK says:

LOL – I think he already has ‘form’ in that respect, doesn’t he ? I vaguely recall Special Branch taking a dim view of him sending flowers to a (fortunately) distant relative of mine – or am I confusing this with something I saw on ‘Police – Camera – Action’ ?

We experienced further site issues yesterday, resulting in the site being down for most of the day and overnight, for nearly 24 hours. We are in touch with the hosting company and are carrying out an investigation into some irregular activity that was apparent on the site, where scripts were being run in the background in order to keep jacking up the resource usage and suck up all the available entry processes on the server, resulting in the dreaded “508 resource limit reached”. There was a script running recursively in the background and it’s very likely to have been due to malicious activity. The investigation into this incident continues.

So it seems someone is not happy about this  blog and the opinions expressed

Surely this could come into play

  6. Dignity says:

We are investigating and there’s a firm(ish) suspect.

  7. jon says:

A suspect is not really much good, you need some form of proof even if its only balance of probabilities

I mean I suspect that Nem is an idiot and have some circumstantial evidence based on the ‘advice he gives’ but is that proof?

I know however certain things because he has posted that info

    Such as

he has a daughter who was in debt

    He has a grandson

    He is/was from Golders Green

  8. Dignity says:

I am well aware of that, Jon. However, if the suspect is the right one, it proves an interesting point; namely desperation.

  9. jon says:

    |Oh I agreePretty desparate to have to resort to such low moves Maybe they should ask an expert how to do it Now where is Nem when you need him?
